Willow Houses

DESCRIPTION:
These two new houses are part of a mini lot subdivision in West Oakland, creating density within an existing single-family neighborhood. We began with two volumes, and wrapped the public face of those volumes in a protective 'shell' of corrugated metal. We then cut and pulled back to allow for openings in the volumes, giving light and air to the living spaces within, as well as views to the street and neighborhood. Finally, to gain more volume and articulate the form, we popped out volumes and pushed back in other places.
