43rd Street (Dogtown)

DESCRIPTION:
The project was designed to resolve several challenges that were presented by its’ context. First, the site was a narrow infill lot in North Oakland. The challenge was to create architecture that was light and air-filled while maintaining privacy from the close proximity to its neighbors. This was accomplished by utilizing courtyards and gardens to allow light in while screening neighbors through spatial alignment and landscape. Second, the project was to sit in a neighborhood of traditional homes, and city bureaucracy insisted on conformity. On the exterior, the design is intended to simultaneously blend into and stand out from the neighborhood. It borrows its roof line from neighboring forms, but the placement of openings and material choices created a much more modern architecture.
