Single Family Residence, Berkeley, CA.
Broadway is located in the Rockridge district of Oakland. The house is open but private – a mix that is accomplished through utilizing greenspace (specifically, trees) and cedar and redwood fencing, and an open frontyard. This home has a folded and wrapping skin that encloses and protects the house from the somewhat busy and noisy street. The open ends of the volume connect to outdoor rooms and gardens at both the front and rear. The wrapped skin has the reading of a barrier from the exterior, recalling a sort of billboard for the private interior. The massing of the house is a series of volumes that reflect the program and interior space. The space is open and connected, allowing each area to flow into the next (including the exterior areas) while still maintaining functional separation.
