5th Street House

Single Family Residence, Oakland, CA

This small small home was conceived as economical ‘new worker housing’ in the wake of the Great Recession.  This was accomplished by starting with a small, virtually unbuildable lot, and continued through the use of a small, efficient footprint, and a simple formal configuration and off the shelf materiality.  These aspects were used in creative combinations to provide a unique design without high cost.  The infill site allowed for increased density, and the proximity to public transit added to the green strategies of reduced energy consumption for the project.
